Safety and Security

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority for Canton City School District. The following information outlines the district's emergency response procedures, including evacuation, lockdown, shelter-in-place, and other safety protocols. Please review these procedures so you understand the appropriate response for different emergencies.

  • For a tornado event, move to pre-designated areas and assume the protective position. If there is a sudden event or you are unable to reach the pre-designated area during a tornado event:

    • Take cover under tables or desks. Hold onto a table or desk leg, or position the desk as a shield.

    • Keep as much of your body shielded as possible.

    • Bury your face in your arms, close your eyes and cover your ears.

    • If outside, lie on your stomach with your face away from the event. Cover your head, face and as much exposed skin as possible. Close your eyes and cover your ears.

    • If a person has special needs or uses a wheelchair, do not remove them from the wheelchair. Those who are standing should sit down.

This response is usually used for earthquakes, explosions and severe weather. Evacuation may follow when it is safe to move.

    • Anyone recognizing immediate danger shouts, "Hit the Deck!"

    • Everyone immediately drops to the ground and lies flat.

    • No one should get up until an adult gives directions.

This response is usually used in the event of gunfire. It is typically followed by Lockdown or Evacuation when it is safe to do so.

    • Move indoors quickly.

    • Close doors behind you.

    • Close windows once you are inside.

This response is used for severe weather, an intruder, a sniper or gunfire, or a hazardous materials release. It may be rapidly followed by Lockdown or Shelter-in-Place.

  • Evacuate students using primary routes unless instructed to use alternate routes.

    • ALL persons must leave the facility.

    • Close, but DO NOT lock, doors behind you.

    • DO NOT return to buildings using a bell signal, as bells can malfunction.

    • Return to the building when instructed by the Incident Commander or report to the relocation site as ordered.

This response is used for fire, an unsafe building (following an explosion or severe weather damage) and a bomb threat.

    • Exterior doors and windows are locked and secured.

    • Free movement within the school building is permitted.

    • May be released by a PA announcement.

This response is usually used for an intruder outside the building.

    • Students in hallways and restrooms move to the nearest classroom.

    • Classroom doors and all exterior doors and windows are immediately locked.

    • Cover windows and door panels, if able.

    • Sit on the floor out of sight of windows and doors. (Usually along an inside wall, if the intruder is inside the building.)

    • Take attendance, including the names of people who have entered and are not usually in your class.

    • Do not open doors or windows. Await police or administrator instructions to evacuate you or notify you in person to resume normal activities.

    • Do not follow PA announcement directions.

    • Move everyone inside. If possible, move to interior rooms on upper-level floors.

    • Close and lock all windows and doors. Assign personnel to doors to control late entries.

    • The custodian should immediately shut down all HVAC units (heating, ventilation and air conditioning).

    • Seal off all openings with tape and plastic (windows, doors, heat/air units, electrical outlets, etc.).

    • Await instructions from public officials before exiting the shelter.

This response is used for hazardous materials in the environment.

  • The district's emergency guide identifies three threat levels:

    • Level I: Monitor - Possible threat.

    • Level II: Standby - Probable threat.

    • Level III: Emergency - Full crisis. Activate Command Post.
