It is important for every student in Ohio to attend school every day, all day. Attendance is calculated by the hour attended, so every minute your student misses, counts against their attendance. Studies routinely show the connection between regular attendance and critical school measures such as reading proficiently, performing well academically, and graduating from high school.

Chronic absence is defined in Ohio as a student missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason – excused, medically excused, unexcused and suspensions. Being one hour late to school, leaving school two hours early, or leaving and returning midday for an appointment are all examples of hours away from instruction. These missed hours contribute to chronic absenteeism and if they are unexcused, will also count toward habitual truancy.
