Open Enrollment

 

In accordance with Board of Education Policy 5113, the Canton City School District Board of Education shall permit students from other Ohio school districts to apply and enroll in the Canton City School District free of any tuition obligation, provided that all provisions of the District’s policy and all procedures outlined in the administrative guidelines are met, including capacity limits by building, grade level, and educational programs. 

 

General Eligibility Guidelines

  • Only those students who would like to be enrolled full-time in grades K-12 in a Canton City school are eligible to apply. Pre-K and part-time students are not eligible.
  • Students must be age eligible for kindergarten in their resident district in order to be eligible to apply for open enrollment in Canton City kindergarten.
  • The resident of the custodial parent/guardian must be located outside of the Canton City School District boundaries, but within the State of Ohio.
  • Students who were suspended or expelled from school for 10 consecutive days or more during the current or previous term are not eligible for open enrollment.
  • Canton City School District residents take top priority for placement.

Timeline for Open Enrollment

April 25 - Parent information available.

April 25 - First day to receive renewal and new student applications for the following school year.

June 30 - Application window closes. ALL applications must be submitted no later than June 30th.

August 1 - All requests submitted by June 30th will be acted upon no later than Aug. 1. Parents and superintendents of other Ohio school districts will be notified of approvals. 

August 15 - Parents must sign and return the inter-district transfer acceptance form within two weeks of notification of acceptance. Failure to do so will void the application.

Please note: This application must be submitted in-person to the Student Enrollment Center in the Timken Career Campus located at 521 Tuscarawas St. W, Canton, OH 44702. Call 330-438-2525 with any questions. Applications will not be accepted at individual school buildings. Two proof of residency forms are required with the application - 1 form must be a lease agreement, mortgage statement, or real estate tax bill.

  • Students who live outside the boundaries of the Canton City School District, but in the state of Ohio, may request enrollment in Canton City’s schools, and, if accepted, will not have to pay tuition.

  • Two proof-of-residency documents for the parent/guardian are required to be submitted with the open enrollment application. (Proof of residency is any "official" mail coming to the parent/guardian's address that includes their name, address and a current date.)

    The first proof of residence must be one of the following:

    • Lease/rental agreement
    • Home sales agreement
    • Mortgage statement
    • Real estate tax bill

    The second proof of residence can include any of the following:

    • Utility bill (within 60 days)
    • Bank statement
    • Personal bill
    • Postal change of address
    • Current pay stub
    • Local, state or federal document

    **Please note that "junk" mail will not be accepted.

     

    The following items are required upon enrollment:

    • Student’s birth proof
    • Student’s immunization record
    • Parent/guardian photo ID
    • Custody papers (if applicable)
    • Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Evaluation Team Report (ETR) (if applicable)
  • Canton City Schools will not provide transportation for open-enrollment students. Transportation will be the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

  • Yes. Parents of open-enrolled students must apply each school year by the deadlines established by the district.

  • You will be notified by mail. A letter will be sent to your home address. Please make sure that your application contains your correct contact information. You will need to sign and return the inter-district transfer acceptance form within two weeks of notification of acceptance. Failure to do so will void the application.

  • No. Additional requirements such as an audition or interview may be required. The Inter-district Open Enrollment application PLUS these additional requirements are necessary for potential acceptance/enrollment.

  • No. Each student needs a separate application.
