NIL for Boosters
Who Is A Booster?
If you are reading this, there is a good chance you are a booster.
Here are some quotes directly from the new OHSAA bylaw:
“The student does not engage in an NIL/Personal Branding Rights agreement that is provided by an OHSAA member school or an agent of the school (e.g. collectives, booster clubs, foundations, administrators, coaches or other individuals)”
“The student does not engage in an NIL/Personal Branding Rights agreement that is provided as an inducement to attend a particular school”
“The student does not engage in an NIL/Personal Branding Rights agreement that provides compensation based on specific athletic performance or achievement (e.g. points scored, etc.)”
When boosters engage in these activities, they risk the eligibility of the athletes and the membership standing of the school.
High School NIL is NOT College NIL
What Can't I Do?
What Can I Do?
One of the best ways that “boosters” can help our school and our athletic department is to keep being boosters in the same ways that you always have. Your financial assistance to the booster clubs and directly to the athletic department have been helping to provide uniforms, equipment, food, and training opportunities to our athletes for years. No amount of NIL deals will decrease those needs. Money also cannot replace the amount of time and talents that many of you share with our athletes and our school.
Here are some other ways you can help athletes pertaining directly to NIL:
Share any knowledge about contracts and tax implications.
Mentor athletes about the importance of protecting their reputation/brand.
Help athletes learn the finer points of presenting themselves professionally.
