NIL Resources For Families

Canton City Schools is providing these NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) resources to athletes and their families to help them navigate the process. All materials, resources, and content are for educational purposes only and should not be interpreted as legal, financial, or professional advice. Families should seek or utilize any educational services or providers they deem appropriate.

Don't Sign Until...

When you are presented with a deal related to your Name, Image, and Likeness, protect yourself, your family, and your eligibility first.

Check with us

Allowing the athletic department to screen your offer gives you the best opportunity to avoid any parts of your deal that may be in violation of the OHSAA bylaws or jeopardize future NCAA eligibility.

If there are things that need changed, doing so BEFORE you sign will avoid any delays in participation that would occur if it is discovered after the season is underway.

Seek legal advice

Contracts can be very complicated. You want to make sure you know exactly what you are getting and exactly what is required of you. These must be spelled out in your agreement. We highly recommend having someone who specializes in contract law review your deal for you and your family.

Understand your compensation and taxes

Compensation that you are receiving is most likely taxable and you and your family are responsible for the proper tax forms which could also include quarterly filings and payments. We highly recommend talking to a tax expert who can walk you through what the process may look like for you.

Additionally, if you are going to receive a substantial amount of money from your NIL deal, you may also need the assistance of a financial planner so that you can protect your income and reach your long term goals for it’s use.

Now That You Have Signed...

Congratulations on your NIL deal. You still need to make sure you do these things.

Fulfill your contract

Make sure that you are able to fulfill the terms of your deal. You now have expectations you have to meet. Be sure to organize your time so that you can perform any required tasks in the proper time frame.

Protect your eligibility

Remember there are many restrictions from the OHSAA on how you can meet the terms of your agreement.

  • Never appear in NIL endorsements wearing your school uniform or using school logos, marks, or branding.
  • Never promote an NIL partner’s logo or products during team activities.
  • Never skip academic classes or athletic team obligations for NIL activities.

Protect your brand

Now that you are being compensated for your name, image, and likeness you should be careful to protect your reputation. People will see and hear how you present yourself in person and online. Presenting yourself in an unprofessional way puts current and future earning potential at risk.
